Tuch scores hat trick as Sabres hand Flames 1st loss of campaign

Toronto city councillor Cynthia Lai has died, her re-election campaign announced in a statement on Friday. "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Councillor Cynthia Lai, Ward 23, Scarborough North this afternoon. We have dimmed the Toronto Sign tonight to honour the memory of Councillor Cynthia Lai. Former city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam tweeted, "I'm deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, Cynthia Lai." "I'm so saddened to learn about Councillor Cynthia Lai's passing," he wrote on Twitter.

Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh MLA calls N.W.T. Health minister's behaviour 'offensive' after 'nay' vote

The latest conflict between the two elected officials ignited during Thursday's sitting, when Edjericon went over the time limit for his member's statement. As he sought unanimous consent to conclude his statement, Green said "nay." CBC has obtained a copy of an email Green sent Edjericon after her "nay" vote to explain her reasoning. In an email to CBC, Green said the Legislative Assembly's rules limit member's statements to two-and-a-half minutes so there is an equitable time for each MLA to speak. In May, NNSL reported on an email from Green to Edjericon that the Tu Nedhé-Wiilideh MLA condemned as colonial.

B.C. cities call for mental health professionals to join police on mental health calls

's Lower Mainland are calling on their local health authority and the province for support for police who are responding to dozens of mental health calls every day. The mayors of Burnaby and Coquitlam have both asked Fraser Health to provide mental health professionals to accompany police officers on mental health calls, similar to programs established in other B.C. Yang worked with Burnaby RCMP's police mental health and outreach team (PMHOT), consisting of three officers who work with community organizations on matters of mental health and homelessness. RCMP, mental health calls increased by nine per cent in B.C. Advocates have long called for mental health professionals, including social workers and nurses, to be involved in mental-health-related calls to police.

Qualtrough said it should not be easier to access a medically assisted death than to get a wheelchair — but it is. Canada Disability Benefit in the worksIn June, Qualtrough reintroduced a bill to establish a benefit for low-income, working-age Canadians with disabilities. This is what the Canada Disability Benefit is trying to do, close that gap [for] the 18-year-old to the 64-year-old living with poverty who has a disability." She also stressed the need to ensure a federal benefit doesn't result in local supports being reduced.

Islam Makhachev pulled off a sensational submission win over Charles Oliveira to win the lightweight title and Aljamain Sterling beat TJ Dillashaw by TKO to successfully defend his bantamweight belt at UFC 280 at the Etihad Arena on Saturday. Makhachev capped his ascent to the lightweight throne with a brilliant win by arm triangle choke against Brazilian Oliveira, the holder of the UFC record for submission wins with 16. His 11th submission win moves the 31-year-old Makhachev on to a record of 23 wins and one loss as a pro. Canadian flyweight Gordon loses via submissionMuhammad Mokaev submitted Canadian flyweight Malcolm Gordon with 34 seconds remaining in the third round on the UFC 280 undercard Saturday. With most of the fight contested on the ground and Gordon defending well, Mokaev finished with a slim 21-17 edge in significant strikes.

Winnipeg mayoral candidates lay out plans for reconciliation at First Nations forum

Winnipeg mayoral candidates addressed Manitoba First Nations leaders on Saturday afternoon, sharing their plans for reconciliation, economic partnership and addressing the city's homelessness and addictions crises. All 10 candidates in attendance committed, in their own way, to partnering with and working alongside First Nations leaders in Manitoba. Gillingham, along with Klein, voted "no" to the idea of a safe injection site in Winnipeg during CBC's mayoral forum on Wednesday. He promised to listen to Indigenous leaders and vowed to make economic development opportunities more accessible to Indigenous people. He said if elected, he would meet with Indigenous leaders to "answer questions and hear you out."
