Police, PTI activists clash after Imran disqualified in Toshakhana case

The guard of PTI MNA Saleh Mohammad being pushed into a police van outside ECP office in Islamabad on Friday. As a result of clashes, hundreds of residents remained trapped between police and protesters at Faizabad and its surrounding areas. Road near Gujar Khan remained suspended due to the protesters who set tyres on fire to protest the disqualification of Imran Khan. The protesters blocked Islamabad Expressway near Rawat whereas traffic movement was also suspended from Faizabad to Murree Road due to the demonstrations. Due to the protests, the Metro Bus Service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad also remained suspended.

‘US using Mahsa’s death to bring about regime change in Iran’

KARACHI: Iran’s Consul General in Karachi Hassan Nourian said on Friday that Mahsa Amini had a medical history and her death was being used by the United States to bring about regime change in Tehran and to recognise Israel. He said this while speaking at a press briefing held at the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran here. The president of the country also phoned the family members of the girl and promised that her death would be investigated. “The whole thing was used by Iran’s detractors.”The consul general said there’s an institute in the US according to whose research social media is used to paint Iran in a bad light. There are more than 1,000 judges, 900 film-makers and 98pc of gynaecological surgeons are women in Iran.

No intention to hold early elections, says PM

LAHORE: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday rebuffed the idea of early elections, declaring that the PDM government had no intention to hold general elections before the end of its constitutional term. “The general elections are still 11 months away and we have no intention to hold elections until the country’s economy comes back on track… We will work day in and day out for 11 months, bring economy back on track and hold general elections when this government will complete its constitutional time period,” said the prime minister while addressing a news conference at his Model Town party office. He said there was no threat to democracy as the government would continue working within the ambit of the constitution. On re-assertion, Mr Sharif said he would talk about Mr Khan’s backdoor contacts in the backdoor. About army chief’s appointment by the end of next month, Mr Sharif said it was a constitutional requirement of a sitting government to complete the process and appoint one of the candidates in a panel.

Experts call for scrapping land acquisition law

Mirza Mehmood, a legal expert, wondered why the land of only the poor was acquired for making the rich richer. “Have you ever seen land of the DHA or Bahria Town being acquired for construction of houses for the poor people?” he asked. It doesn’t seem to be in the public interest at all as it really reflects going against the public interest.”While calling for a legislative intervention in the land acquisition law, Mr Mehmood sought imposition of a ban on acquisition of agricultural land as it had happened in India and or the use of land for private purposes. “For getting the land from the people under the land acquisition act, FIRs under terrorism and other serious charges were lodged against those who tried resisting the government’s land acquisition,” she said.

Free cochlear implant surgeries conducted at Pims

ISLAMABAD: A United Kingdom-based team of doctors on Sunday conducted free cochlear implants on four children for the first time at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) and another two surgeries would be conducted on Monday (today). A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that electrically stimulates the cochlear nerve (nerve for hearing). “The first cochlear implant programme in Pakistan was started in Lahore in August 2000 with technical support from a team from Manchester. Since then, cochlear implant surgery is being done in various private and semiprivate hospitals in Pakistan. For the first time, cochlear implant surgeries are being done at the Children Hospital, Pims which is the largest public sector hospital in the capital city,” the Pims director said.

Imran calls Kenya shooting act of ‘targeted killing’

“When Arshad Sharif started receiving threats from unknown numbers for exposing the regime change conspiracy, I asked him to leave the country,” Mr Khan claimed. “No matter what the people say about the murder of Mr Sharif, it is an act of targeted killing,” he said. Mr Sharif was shot dead in Kenya allegedly by the local police on Sunday night, with an official police statement later expressing “regrets on the unfortunate incident” and saying an investigation was underway. Mr Khan paid tribute to journalist Sharif, calling him “a brave patriot who never compromised his conscience”. And they wanted to do the same with him what they did with Azam Swati, Shahbaz Gill and Jameel Farooqui,” Mr Khan was quoted by Dawn.com as claiming.

Babar lands in fake sexting media storm after ‘joke’ Indian tweet

NEW DELHI: Indian media is awash with articles on how Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam was allegedly “sexting” another player’s girlfriend. The problem: it’s false news that originated in a “joke” tweet from a parody account. Nimo Yadav” account on January 15 said that Babar had been “sexting with gf [girlfriend] of another Pakistan cricketer”. Not only that, but the player was “promising her that her bf [boyfriend] won’t be out of team if she keeps sexting with him... The Twitter account holder said he took the image and video from a since-deactivated Instagram account.
