1 dead, dozens hurt as tornadoes hit Texas and Oklahoma

POWDERLY, Texas (AP) — Residents in northeastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma began assessing weather damage Saturday, working to recover and thankful to have survived after tornadoes tore through the region, killing at least one, injuring others and leaving homes and buildings in ruins. “We left like five minutes before the tornado actually hit,” Davis, 33, told The Associated Press. Powderly is about 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of Idabel and about 120 miles (193 kilometers) northeast of Dallas and both are near the Texas-Oklahoma border. High school basketball: West Albany boys believing after win against Woodburn

West Albany boys basketball coach Drew Halvorson and his staff have been telling their players that they’re a 5A playoff team. Then they went out and beat the Mid-Willamette Conference’s other Bulldogs, then-third-ranked Woodburn, with a 63-57 overtime home win last Thursday. West didn’t play its best game the first time against Woodburn, a 76-53 loss on the road Jan. 2. Tuesday against West Albany, she had 28 points including six 3-pointers, with four of those deep ball coming in the first quarter. Through Tuesday’s games, Silverton was second in the OSAA rankings, South Albany fourth, Crescent Valley ninth, Corvallis 11th and West Albany 20th.

OSU women's basketball: Beavers welcome new faces as season begins

Oregon State women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck — as well as returning players Talia von Oelhoffen and Jelena Mitrovic — met with the media this week to talk about the upcoming season. The moves followed a season in which Oregon State went 17-14 and failed to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. He said Oregon State fans develop strong attachments to players and love to watch them develop over the course of their careers. Oregon State recruited both when they were in high school and Rueck said they first visited the Corvallis campus in 2014. Mitrovic took on a bigger role late in the season and started all four games for Oregon State in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

Lillard has 71 pts and 13 3s; Blazers beat Rockets 131-114

Lillard tied Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell for the most points in a game this season after Mitchell also scored 71 in a win over Chicago on Jan. 2. Lillard left the game with 44 seconds left, tied with Mitchell, Elgin Baylor (1960) and David Robinson (1994) for the eighth-most points scored in a game in NBA history. Jerami Grant added 13 points for the Blazers, who led by as many as 23. The Blazers led 73-58 at the break with Lillard the 10th player since the 1996-97 season with 40-plus points in a half.
