DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — The world is in a “sorry state” because of myriad “interlinked” challenges including climate change and Russia’s war in Ukraine that are “piling up like cars in a chain reaction crash,” the U.N. chief said at the World Economic Forum’s meeting Wednesday. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered his gloomy message on the second day of the elite gathering of world leaders and corporate executives in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum is taking place in Davos from Jan. 16 until Jan. 20, 2023. Iowa governor’s lawyer pushes for 6-week abortion ban

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa judge should allow a law passed in 2018 that bans most abortions to take effect, three years after the measure was ruled unconstitutional, lawyers for Gov. Schandevel said the injunction rests entirely on an Iowa Supreme Court 2018 decision that guaranteed the right to an abortion under the Iowa Constitution and cases decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1992 and 1973 that established abortion rights nationally. The case should at least in the short term decide whether most abortions remain legal in Iowa. Since the 2018 decision granting Iowans a constitutional right to an abortion, Iowa courts have held abortion restrictions to the highest level of strict scrutiny, which requires laws to be narrowly tailored to fulfill a compelling governmental interest. She noted that the Iowa Supreme Court has previously said bans on abortion early in pregnancy, including six-week bans, could not survive the undue burden test.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Bo Horvat scored his second goal of the game at 4:09 of overtime and the struggling Vancouver Canucks beat the road-weary Arizona Coyotes 3-2 on Saturday night. Horvat tipped Quinn Hughes’ long shot from the slot on an overtime power play after Arizona was called for too many men. Fischer slid a shot under Martin’s left pad with 8:38 left in the first for his fifth goal of the season. The Canucks went 1 for 8 with the man advantage while the Coyotes were 1 for 3. Canucks players wore lavender-colored warm-up jerseys with name bars paying tribute to someone who’s battled the disease.

Promoted with two dramatically edited trailers that hinted at a “war against Meghan,” the series “Harry & Meghan” is the couple’s latest effort to tell their story. The show “Harry & Meghan” promises to tell the “full truth” about Prince Harry and his wife Meghan’s estrangement from the royal family. The documentary includes video diaries recorded by Meghan and Harry — apparently on their phones — in March 2020, amid the couple’s acrimonious split from the royal family. Meghan alleged that before their first child was born, a member of the royal family commented on how dark the baby’s skin might be. Media attention was also diverted by Netflix’s decision to release the first trailer for “Harry & Meghan” in the middle of the trip.

Big week for US-Mexico ties going into North American summit

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s been a big week for U.S.-Mexico relations, and that was even before President Joe Biden becomes the first U.S. leader to visit Mexico in nearly a decade. The two presidents, along with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, will gather in Mexico City on Monday and Tuesday for a North American leaders summit. Biden hopes to use the summit “to keep driving North America’s economic competitiveness and help promote inclusive growth and prosperity,” said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. Biden will become the first U.S. leader to visit Mexico in nearly a decade. Both Mexico’s proximity to the U.S. and existing trade agreements would be incentives for American factories to relocate south of the border.

Ukrainian startups bring tech innovation to CES 2023

Las Vegas (AP) — The past year has been difficult for startups everywhere, but running a company in Ukraine during the Russian invasion comes with a whole different set of challenges. Clinical psychologist Ivan Osadchyy brought his medical device, called Knopka, to this year’s CES show in Las Vegas in hopes of getting it into U.S. hospitals. His is one of a dozen Ukrainian startups backed by a government fund that are at CES this year to show their technology to the world. The race for RNC chair will be decided on Jan. 27, 2023, by secret ballot as Republican officials from all 50 states gather in Southern California. The next RNC chair will lead the committee through the 2024 presidential election. The California attorney also vowed to remain independent in the 2024 Republican primary should she win.
