The Irish failed-friendship tale “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical drama “The Fabelmans” are among the nominees for the coveted Producers Guild of America Award for motion pictures, which will be awarded Saturday evening. The PGA honor is traditionally a strong indicator of which film will win the best picture Oscar. Since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expanded from five to 10 nominees in 2010, only four films have won the best picture Oscar without first winning the PGA Award. The motion picture “Till” will be honored with the Stanley Kramer Award. A handful of PGA awards were presented during ceremonies earlier this week in Santa Monica and New York.

Los Angeles County Sees Slight Increase in COVID Hospitalizations

The number of people hospitalized with a coronavirus infection in Los Angeles County increased by 19 to 1,220, according to the latest state data. The seven-day daily average testing positivity rate in the county Friday was 10.22% — down from 11.7% Thursday, and about the same as the 10.2% figure of a week ago. “Public Health officials are concerned that traveling and gathering during the holidays will result in increased transmission and severe illness which would place greater stress on the county’s hospitals and health care system,” the health department said in a statement. “To help protect older people and people who are immuno-compromised or have underlying health conditions in your family, at your jobs, and in the community, Los Angeles County residents should continue to mask when indoors and follow other health measures,” the health department said. “In addition to wearing masks when indoors and getting the updated booster, there is still time to get the seasonal flu vaccine, since flu season generally lasts into the spring,” the health department said.

Fox’s coverage of Super Bowl LVII drew the second-largest audience in U.S. television history, 113.055 million viewers, trailing only NBC’s coverage of Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015, which averaged 114.81 million for the New England Patriots’ 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. The second season premiere of the cooking competition series averaged 15.657 million viewers, following eight- and 14-minute postgame shows that averaged 88.171 million and 58.474 million viewers. The previous low was 26.936 million viewers for Biden’s speech to a joint session of Congress in 2021. Viewership was down 28.5% from Biden’s 2022 State of the Union address which averaged 38.197 million viewers on 16 networks. “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” was second, averaging 7.246 million viewers, and the “CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell” third, averaging 5.289 million viewers.

Liquor Store Owner Who Shot Would-be Robber Dies

According to Riverside County sheriff’s Capt. Mike Koehler, four alleged would-be robbers pulled into the parking lot of Norco Market & Liquor, exiting a BMW SUV holding rifles. The defendants were ultimately turned over to Riverside County sheriff’s deputies. Koehler said that further investigation, relying on security surveillance video from the store, confirmed Cope had opened fire in self defense. They have no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.

Heavy rain continues to fall across Southern California again Tuesday as yet another storm system thundered over the region, creating high winds, flooding, landslides and hazardous marine and driving conditions. The powerful storm, expected to move through Los Angeles, Orange and other southern counties through Tuesday, dumped more than 10 inches of rain in some areas. About 3,500 customers, and over 1,200 in Fairfax, have been affected by power outages throughout Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation implemented a road closure of Mulholland Drive between Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Coldwater Canyon Drive in anticipation of the storm activity.
