US close: Stocks mixed as industrials shine, big tech tanks

Wall Street was mixed at the close on Thursday, with the Dow stronger on GDP data, while the Nasdaq was under pressure from some disappointing big tech earnings. The Dow closed 194.17 points higher on Thursday, reversing some of its earlier gains but still outperforming its two-point rise on Wednesday. “Most notably, we are seeing the Dow outperform as manufacturing stocks gaining in the wake of improved demand and margins for industrial giant Caterpillar. Outside of the tech space, trade bellwether Caterpillar closed up 7.71% after the industrial giant beat expectations with its latest set of quarterly results. It was another big evening for tech earnings on Thursday as well, with Apple, Amazon and Intel all reporting after the closing bell.

US open: Dow advances more than 460 points at the bell

The Dow opened 469.15 points higher on Thursday, easily outperforming its two-point gain on Wednesday. Disappointing results from Meta Platforms were in focus at the open, with shares in the Facebook parent company falling as much as 20% in the pre-market on the back of weak fourth-quarter guidance and weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings. The biggest contribution to growth in Q3 came from a narrowing of the trade deficit, as US retailers imported fewer items. According to the Labor Department, the four-week moving average came to 219,000, an increase of 6,750 from the previous week's unrevised average. In its policy statement, the European Central Bank did say that policymakers expected to raise rather "further" whilst sticking to their meeting-by-meeting approach.

NatWest delivers 'strong' Q3 performance, IAG swings to quarterly profit

Stocks to watchUK bank NatWest said on Friday that it had continued to deliver a strong financial performance in the third quarter despite operating in a "challenging environment". NatWest posted a third quarter attributable profit of £187.0m and a return on tangible equity of 2.9%, as well as a "robust balance sheet" with strong capital and liquidity levels. The company posted an operating profit of €1.2bn compared with a loss of €452.0m a year ago. Newspaper round-upA Norway-style windfall tax on energy companies could raise £33.3bn extra by 2027, plugging a hole in government finances and helping keep energy bills low, analysis has found. So are electric cooking pots such as pressure cookers, rice cookers, slow cookers or multifunctional pots that can do all three things, with sales up 80%.

All eyes over the coming week will be on a raft of data on the US jobs market. Across the Channel, investors will be waiting on the release of final readings for S&P Global's PMIs for euro area manufacturing and services for December. Yet arguably the most important data point of the week on the Continent won't come until Friday, when Eurostat will provide a first look at euro area consumer prices at the end of 2022. Barclays Research however is anticipating a steeper drop to 9.2%, although core CPI is only seen slipping from 5.0% to 4.9%. Microsoft and NVIDIA announce expansive new gaming deal

The agreement will enable gamers to stream Xbox PC titles from GeForce NOW to PCs, macOS, Chromebooks, smartphones and other devices. It will also enable Activision Blizzard PC titles, such as Call of Duty, to be streamed on GeForce NOW after Microsoft's acquisition of Activision closes. "Xbox remains committed to giving people more choice and finding ways to expand how people play," said Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer. Xbox PC games currently available in third-party stores like Steam or Epic Games Store will also be able to be streamed through GeForce NOW.
