QUEBEC - The mother of two Quebec girls killed by their father in July 2020 told the opening of a coroner’s inquest Monday she still has no explanation for why Martin Carpentier committed such heinous crimes. The search for the girls and their father turned into a multi-day police manhunt that gripped the province. Quebec’s public security minister ordered a coroner’s inquest last year after Radio-Canada reported on new evidence that had not been part of a coroner’s report into the girls’ deaths. Lemieux told the inquest that she tried to impart a sense of urgency to police in the hours after the disappearances of her children. Earlier in the day, Lemieux told the inquiry she was unaware Carpentier wanted to divorce and was afraid of losing the girls.

More than 60 years of combined municipal government experience will not return to city and regional council chambers to represent Niagara Falls constituents during the next four-year term of office. It’s a deal: CUPE school support staff vote in favour of four-year contract

CUPE school support staff have ratified a four-year contract reached with the Doug Ford government, with 73 per cent voting in favour. “It’s been a long road to get here,” said Laura Walton, president of CUPE’s Ontario School Boards Council of Unions, who released the results at Queen’s Park on Monday morning. “The provincial government thought they could play the same type of games with us that governments have used against workers for years. They thought they could divide us, they thought they could dictate terms on us. The deal with CUPE was reached Nov. 20 — a day before workers were set to go on strike.

Niagara Falls leads the BIA pack across the region due to its ‘very different’ business areas

There are 18 active Business Improvement Areas across Niagara’s 12 municipalities — six of them in Niagara Falls. Representatives with five of the BIAs across the region the Niagara Falls Review spoke to said it’s understandable Niagara Falls would have the number of BIAs it does because there are so many unique areas with clusters of businesses in the city. BIAs in Niagara Falls represent downtown, Lundy’s Lane, Main and Ferry, Clifton Hill, Victoria Centre and Fallsview districts. “I would say that Niagara Falls is definitely much more diverse. We are unique in that we are not like a lot of downtown BIAs where it’s a walkable community,” he said.

What we know and don't know about St. Catharines chemical facility fire

UPDATE: 5 p.m. Jan. 12: The city of St. Catharines stated that the fire at the 20 Keefer Road chemical facility is under control and that evacuated residents are free to return home. The only road remaining closed is Keefer Road from Northrup Crescent to Seaway Haulage. Firefighters were called to the Ssonix Products facility at 20 Keefer Road at 6:35 a.m. on Thursday after multiple explosions and a fire were reported. Paramedics transported a male patient to the St. Catharines hospital after the initial explosion in critical condition. • The St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre at 425 Carlton St. operated as a temporary shelter facility for evacuees, with food and showers available.

Could increased awareness about the health consequences of drinking lead to a generational shift away from alcohol? On Tuesday, Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health was released by a team of researchers. “A shift away from alcohol use will need to be a concerted effort that’s shared among different levels of government and different groups. “A number of Canadian brewers, including a number of our members, have voluntary health warning labels or pictographs on packaging dealing with warnings against drinking while pregnant and driving while intoxicated,” Hélie said. “We’re encouraging people to track the number of standard drinks that they’re consuming and to make informed decisions about alcohol and their health,” he said.

St. Peter’s Saints Saints Classic high school hockey tourney revived in Peterborough

The St. Peter’s Saints Classic high school hockey tournament has been resurrected after a four-year absence. They lost 3-2 to Kingston’s Holy Cross, 2-0 to Cobourg Collegiate and 3-2 in overtime to London’s Mother Theresa. Mother Theresa and Holy Cross advance to semifinals against Brooklin and Sault Ste. In the girls division, St. Peter’s were 2-0 heading into game three after beating Hamilton’s St. Mary’s 4-0 and Adam Scott 12-0. Peterborough’s Holy Cross were also 2-0 after beating Adam Scott 11-2 and Cobourg’s St. Mary’s 5-0.

Bitter legacy hangs over today’s energy discussions between Quebec and N.L. premiers

Legault travelled to St. John’s this week for discussions with Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey about the 1969 Churchill Falls hydroelectric energy deal — and what will come after it ends in 2041. The lopsided deal heavily favours Quebec, and has left a lasting bitterness in Newfoundland and Labrador. Under the agreement, Hydro-Québec pays a fixed price of 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour for Churchill Falls power. Pam Frampton, who retired in 2021 as the managing editor of The Telegram newspaper in St. John’s, said she grew up under the shadow of Churchill Falls. Frampton said the Quebec premier needs to know that the people of Newfoundland and Labrador are hardened and still smarting from both projects.

Flames winger Milan Lucic reaches 1,100 career NHL games

Calgary Flames winger Milan Lucic achieved a career 1,100 NHL games played Thursday with a live audience on hand for that milestone. The 34-year-old from Vancouver reached another longevity benchmark Thursday when the Flames were at home to the Buffalo Sabres. Out of almost 7,500 players in the NHL’s 105 years, only 211 have played 1,100 games. “Feels like it wasn’t too long ago, where we were celebrating 1000,” Lucic said before Thursday’s game. Lucic has played for four teams over his 16 seasons starting with the Boston Bruins (566), Los Angeles Kings (81), Edmonton Oilers (243) and Flames (209).
