Thompson’s goal stood as the game-winner on this night, his second game-winning tally against the Wolf Pack on the season. At that point, Garand was lifted from the game and replaced by Louis Domingue in the Wolf Pack goal. Turner Elson would get the Wolf Pack on the board, grabbing a rebound from a Zach Giuttari shot and pushing it past Jakub Skarek. The Wolf Pack hit the road for a matchup with the Providence Bruins, their fifth and final matchup this month, on Friday, January 27th.

I think that gives him the confidence to know when he has a plan of knowing how to attack this defense with this particular play then he’s really, really good.

The Fed is using a wide range of labor market data as indication of how its anti-inflation medication is working, as we know from Powell. This is still historically low, in the same range as during the hot labor market in the two years just before the pandemic. So we’re not seeing the great loosening of the labor market just yet:Initial claims for unemployment insurance. For the labor market to soften a little bit, we would have to see the number of initial unemployment claims rise above the 300,000-mark. But the recessions before 2008 began when unemployment claims spiked through the 400,000-mark (except the oil-shock recession from late 1973 into 1974).

Natural Gas Futures in Europe Plunge 15% Today, Down 84% from Crazy Spike

The price of Dutch front-month TTF Natural Gas Futures – a benchmark for northwest Europe – plunged 15% today to €54.85 per megawatt-hour (MWh), and has now collapsed by 84% from the crazy spike in the summer of 2022. A large-scale effort by households and businesses particularly in Germany to reduce natural gas consumption (heating, hot water), motivated also by the big price increases of natural gas. A shift in power production from natural gas to other energy sources, including coal, also motivated by big price increases of natural gas through the summer of 2022. All of this worked together to reduce demand for natural gas and increase supply to replace pipeline natural gas from Russia. Natural gas storage facilities in Europe are in exceptionally good shape for this time of the year.

Last, Most Important Inflation Measure before the Fed’s Meeting Next Week, “Core PCE,” Worsened for 2nd Month in a Row

No signs of inflation slowing down, as measured by the yardstick for the Fed’s 2% inflation target. The PCE price index released today is the last inflation index before the Fed’s meeting next week. The core PCE price index jumped 5.1% in September, compared to a year ago, the fourth-highest reading in this cycle, behind January, February, and March. But the August and September moved in the wrong direction again:In terms of the Fed’s 2% inflation target as measured by core PCE, inflation is worsening and now measures over 2.5 times the Fed’s target. On a month-to-month basis, the “core PCE” price index jumped by 0.5% in September from August.

Silvergate Capital, which owns Silvergate Bank, is a tiny bank holding company that had gone public via IPO in November 2019, and got into crypto to become a big crypto bank, serving crypto companies, such as FTX, which started to implode as part of the crypto implosion. The FDIC, which insures dollar-deposit accounts at Silvergate Bank, is likely getting very antsy because today, Silvergate reported a laundry list of Q4 losses and write-downs that could wipe out most of its equity capital. At first through wholesale funding. “As customers began to withdraw deposits during the fourth quarter of 2022, Silvergate utilized wholesale funding to satisfy outflows,” it said today.
