Though Auger-Aliassime rarely shows emotion during he match, his mis-footing had him shaking his head and glancing towards his coach, Freddie Fontang. The 22-year-old from Mississauga had never before advanced beyond the second round at the Australian Open.

UN ready to vote on sanctions against Haitian gang leader

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council planned to vote Friday on a resolution that would demand an immediate end to violence and criminal activity in Haiti and impose sanctions on a powerful gang leader. Also dropped was mention of an Oct. 8 letter from U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres outlining options to help Haiti’s National Police combat high levels of gang violence. A second resolution, which was still being worked on late Thursday, would address the issue of combating Haiti’s violence. The sanctions resolution being put to a vote Friday named only a single Haitian — Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier, whose gang has blocked a key fuel terminal leading to severe shortages. The resolution, however, would also establish a Security Council committee to impose sanctions on other Haitian individuals and groups whose actions threaten the peace, security or stability of the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation.

And why we had gathered midday (since Don Alfonso is not typically open for lunch)? To take in the inaugural Canadian round of the Young Chef Young Waiter competition. Alas, our assigned chef here lost points when our entire table decided that, as flavourful as the dish was, the temperature was off.

In his ‘Double Murder’ double dance bill, Hofesh Shechter balances bleakness with hope

Now, for his company’s third Toronto visit, Shechter is offering a glimmer of hope in a double bill that contrasts his darkest visions with a gentler portrayal of humanity and its potential for healing. The first part of the evening is a work called “Clowns” that Shechter made in 2016 for Nederlands Dans Theater in The Hague. On its past visits in 2012 and 2018, the London-based Hofesh Shechter Company has appeared at the almost 900-seat Bluma Appel Theatre. This visit it’s settling into the much more intimate 450-seat Fleck Dance Theatre as the first offering in Harbourfront Centre’s 2022/23 “Torque” season of international contemporary dance. I’m sure it’s going to be very moving for audiences.”Shechter is happy that Toronto audiences will see “Double Murder” in an intimate environment.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly showcased Thursday two countries in lockstep on the pressing global issues of the day, but still stumbling when it comes to addressing issues at the Canada-U.S. border. But while the deepening of efforts to work together on global issues was clear, how two pressing domestic irritants will get solved was less obvious. So while the U.S. is listening to Canada’s concerns about the border, Blinken said, it has to be seen in a more global context. That’s led to lengthy backlogs in applications and criticism that economic travel is being delayed as a result. “We both feel strongly that the most powerful bond we have is in the ability of Canadians and Americans alike to move back and forth to our respective countries,” Blinken said.
