Unlike races at the top of the ballot, the state Senate contests don’t often make headlines, feature prime-time debates or are fought over flashy TV commercials. And voters there look a lot like the electorate in six other contested state Senate districts this year. It’s currently represented by Democrat Jessie Danielson, of Wheat Ridge, who is running for reelection in Senate District 22. “The Senate had the harder map after redistricting,” said Morgan Carroll, the chair of the Colorado Democratic Party.

Opinion: 151 new oil and gas wells is just what Aurora doesn’t need

I am alarmed by oil and gas company Crestone Peak Resources’ application to drill 151 new oil and gas wells in Adams and Arapahoe Counties, as part of its “Box Elder” plan. The emissions predicted from Box Elder are expected to exceed 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide. Many of the Box Elder plan’s proposed locations are near sensitive areas for water resources. Box Elder’s proposed use of enormous quantities of our water resources flies in the face of our need to conserve this precious resource. The Box Elder plan must be denied; we simply can’t afford worse air pollution, jeopardized health, and further strained water resources.

Denver announces 14-day shelter limit for migrants as Colorado governor stops busing them to other states

The mayors said they had received hundreds of migrants from Colorado since December. The governor estimated about 70% of migrants, many from politically unstable Venezuela, were trying to reach final destinations other than Colorado. About 560 migrants slept in city shelters Sunday night, and 582 slept in shelters set up by churches and nonprofits. City officials said they began informing migrants at the end of December that, beginning Jan. 9, the 14-day shelter limit would go into effect. Greg Abbott, a Republican, sent thousands of migrants to Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York during the spring and summer.

Xcel Energy will hike its gas rate for a third time this year in Colorado

Adding utility rate increases one on top of another is called “pancaking” and Wednesday Colorado regulators tossed another flapjack on the stack, granting Xcel Energy a $64.2 million increase in gas rates. “This rate proposal supports essential investments that will improve system reliability, strengthen safety and inspection programs, and take meaningful steps to operate the cleanest natural gas system possible,” Tyler Bryant, an Xcel Energy spokesman, said in an email. While those figures are for the average bill over 12 months, Xcel Energy has already warned that during December, the highest natural gas usage month, bills could jump by 54% compared with the same month in 2021. For the single-year increase Xcel Energy wanted $94.2 million. In its filing on the rate case, the state Office of Utility Consumer Advocate, which represents residential and small business customers, had calculated that Xcel Energy needed only a $12 million increase.

State Rep. Yadira Caraveo, the Democrat running to represent Colorado’s new 8th Congressional District, has since May 13 paid herself a salary of more than $39,000 from her campaign coffers, according to a Colorado Sun analysis of Federal Elections Commission filings. Caraveo, a pediatrician, entered the race to represent Colorado’s new, highly competitive 8th District in August 2021, meaning that she didn’t start paying herself a salary until well into her bid. State Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, a Republican running to represent the 8th Congressional District, speaks to supporters at an event Saturday at her campaign’s headquarters in Thornton. “Yadira Caraveo has worked hard all her life to put herself through school, now giving back to her community as a pediatrician and state legislator. We need more leaders like Yadira in Congress.”The race in the 8th District is one of the most competitive U.S. House contests in the nation this year.

The last few months of 2022 have been particularly deadly for Coloradans who are homeless

People gather during a vigil to remember those who have died in 2022 while they were homeless, on Dec. 21. The count for the seven-county Denver metro area this year was 263, up five deaths from 2021, but organizers noted that information on homeless deaths is incomplete. Homeless deaths were on the rise in other cities, too. The number is a sharp increase from 2021 when the office recorded 78 homeless deaths. Denver officials are seeking volunteers, part-time workers and donations of food, clothing and money to help care for the migrants.

Tuesday’s total lunar eclipse will last from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday. “During a lunar eclipse, Earth’s atmosphere scatters sunlight. The blue light from the Sun scatters away, and longer-wavelength red, orange, and yellow light pass through, turning our Moon red. Because the Earth’s shadow is big in comparison to the moon, the lunar eclipse will last several hours. You’ll get to vote on the next president well before the next total lunar eclipse comes in March 2025.
