A brilliant counter-attacking move from Liverpool was capped off by Trent Alexander-Arnold finding Gakpo at the back post. There are few better ways to open your Liverpool account than in a Merseyside derby — Gakpo finally has that tick in his box. They pushed the team forward when they needed to and got back to hold their own defensively when Everton did try going forward. Liverpool would attract Everton towards them, allow the spaces to open up, and counter-attacking with pace and purpose — led by the blistering pace of Salah, Gakpo and Nunez. It is an approach that has served Liverpool so well for many years under Jurgen Klopp — but game state matters.
