Luka Doncic Injury Watch resumes as Mavericks avoid meltdown vs. travel-weary Pelicans

The Mavericks appeared primed to cruise to an easy victory Thursday night over the travel-weary New Orleans Pelicans — until Luka Doncic tried to dunk. About five minutes into the third quarter of Dallas’ 111-106 win, Doncic drove toward the basket and looked to score over Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas. New Orleans outscored Dallas 49-27 after Doncic exited with 6:47 left in the third quarter, when the Mavericks led by 27 points (84-57). If not for Valanciunas getting off an in-bound dunk at the quarter buzzer, Doncic would’ve outscored the Pelicans himself in the opening period. The Mavericks’ transition Thursday from blowout positivity to Doncic injury concern to clutch nerves did little to help ease their fears.

Astros complete ALCS sweep of New York Yankees, advance to 4th World Series in 6 years

NEW YORK — Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman delivered big hits and the Houston Astros advanced to the World Series again, finishing a four-game sweep of New York in the AL Championship Series with a 6-5 victory Sunday night aided by another defensive gaffe from the Yankees. Houston will open the World Series at home Friday night against Bryce Harper and the wild-card Philadelphia Phillies, who beat San Diego earlier in the day to close out the best-of-seven NLCS in five games. After losing to Atlanta in last year’s World Series, Houston earned the fifth pennant in franchise history and another chance at its second World Series championship. Able to negotiate with all teams starting on the sixth day after the World Series, Judge is due a big reward for betting on himself. In his fifth season as manager, New York sprinted to a 61-23 record in early July, sparking comparison with the 1998 championship Yankees.

But an increasing number of political candidates just skipped forums that make them answerable to the public. In Tarrant County, Tim O’Hare and Phil Sorrells, Republican candidates for top county positions, declined to participate in the Fort Worth Report’s debate. During primary season this spring, Politico detailed a nationwide slate of Republican candidates who skipped traditional election forums like debates. With state governments increasingly sorting themselves by party, and gerrymandering increasingly homogenizing voter pools, Texas Republicans are able to treat general elections as an exercise in running out the clock. The sad irony is that the Republican Party of Texas is choosing this tack just at a time when conservative principles are enjoying popularity.

Mavericks drop third straight as struggles with shorthanded teams continue vs. Raptors

The Mavericks (9-9) are 1-6 on the road and now face a quick-turn Sunday night game in Milwaukee against the 13-5 Bucks. The Mavericks outshot Toronto 47.9% to 43.2%, but doomed themselves by making only 11-of-39 3-point attempts (28.2%), committing 16 turnovers and getting pounded on the boards, 48-34. “Of the 39 (threes), 25 of them were probably uncontested or lightly contested,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. The game was tied at 90 with 3:17 left, but the Mavericks were unable to take a lead thereafter. The Mavericks lost at New Orleans on a night when the Pelicans were without three starters, including Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.
