Many countries have imposed testing requirements on travellers from China that the Foreign Ministry has protested, and worries remain about the spread of the virus in China since containment measures were lifted.

N.S. weightlifting coach charged with sexual assault of teenager after multiple complaints

A Nova Scotia weightlifting coach has been charged with the sexual assault of a teenager, more than five months after three different women came forward with allegations of inappropriate behaviour. According to Halifax District RCMP, they received a report on June 28 about a sexual assault in nearby Beaver Bank, N.S., which prompted a criminal investigation. The following month, on Sept. 28, Isaac James Smith of Beaver Bank was charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual touching while in a position of trust. June 28 is also when Halifax District RCMP received a sexual assault report involving Smith, who was charged on Sept. 28. Simona Jellinek is a Toronto-based lawyer who specializes in sexual abuse and assault cases.

Two in five U.S. voters worry about intimidation at polls: Reuters-Ipsos

WASHINGTON -Two in five U.S. voters say they are worried about threats of violence or voter intimidation at polling stations during the country's midterm elections, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. But officials in Arizona, a key battleground, have already asked the federal government to probe a case of possible voter intimidation, after people casting ballots were conspicuously filmed and followed. Kathy Boockvar, a former top election official for Pennsylvania, said fears of voter intimidation and violence run counter to American tradition. Among the registered voters polled by Reuters/Ipsos, 43% were concerned about threats of violence or voter intimidation while voting in person. About two-thirds of Republicans and one-third of Democrats think voter fraud is a widespread problem, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Former Ottawa police boss defends intelligence reading of 'Freedom Convoy'

Despite this, Sloly testified that he believed most would leave after the weekend, up until the “Freedom Convoy” protest, which saw some trucks arrive Jan. 28, really got underway Jan. 29. He said police were overwhelmed as thousands of trucks, other vehicles and protesters poured into the city and converged near Parliament Hill. The former chief says there wasn't just one “Freedom Convoy,” but multiple ones that descended on the city.

BEIJING -U.S. futures are mixed Thursday ahead of an update on the U.S. economy and another hefty slate of corporate earnings. McDonald's rose 3% in premarket after it reported strong third-quarter sales, boosted by customer engagement on its app. Southwest Airlines jumped more than 4% it reported record operating revenue in its third quarter, thanks to strong summer travel demand. The Fed is expected to raise its benchmark lending rate by another three-quarters of a percentage point at its November meeting. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong gained 0.7% to 15,425.03.

Democrats turn to Obama for U.S. midterm miracle, or at least to stem the bleeding

"President Obama remains able to unite base Democrats, persuadable voters, and to motivate demographics less likely to turn out in midterm elections like young people," said Ben LaBolt, who served as spokesman for the first Black president's successful 2012 re-election campaign. "Bringing in President Obama helps to underscore the importance of African-American vote, while also exciting other voters." But Democrats will have to wonder if that will be enough, as recent polling has shown Republican candidates gaining strength across the board. The Senate race is Georgia is essentially tied, even as Walker has been hamstrung by a series of controversies.

Dusty Baker laments lack of U.S.-born Black players in World Series

HOUSTON -Dusty Baker grew up watching Black stars shine in the World Series, paving his path to a life devoted to baseball. Since then, the 1950 matchup between the New York Yankees and Phillies has been the only World Series without a U.S.-born Black player. He said that Black players made up just 7.2 per cent of opening day roster this year, the lowest percentage since study data was first collected in 1991, when 18 per cent of MLB players were Black. The Phillies had no Black players on their opening roster this year for the first time since 1959. While “very disappointed and discouraged” with the situation this year, Baker hopes the makeup of the top of the most recent draft means this will be the last World Series where U.S.-born Black players aren’t represented.
