By TIM REYNOLDSPhiladelphia’s Joel Embiid, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Portland’s Damian Lillard had to have known they were going to the All-Star Game. The reserves for the Feb. 19 All-Star Game in Salt Lake City were announced Thursday night. James and Antetokounmpo will draft their teams live, shortly before the All-Star Game in a new twist this season; past All-Star drafts in the now-6-year-old captain’s format had been done ahead of time. The Rising Stars event is Feb. 17, the first night of the three-night All-Star weekend. All-Star Saturday — featuring the 3-point contest, dunk contest and skills competition — takes center stage the next night, followed by the 72nd All-Star Game on Sunday.

Salem’s season ends

SALEM — The fourth-seeded Salem Quakers girls soccer team entered the Division II district semifinal contest knowing they were facing a tough opponent. “It has been awesome,” senior Mikaylynn Murphy reflected on the Quakers season. “It has been a great season, definitely the best I’ve experienced in high school as a team. They added a second goal just four minutes later on a scrum in front of Quakers goaltender Kaylee Carlisle that trickled into the net. Salem has had a fantastic season, a fantastic record, and success in the playoffs.

VANCE: The most important thing we need to do to slow rising inflation is to open up America’s energy markets. Unfortunately, the Biden administration, I think, has really, really tamped down on pipeline, on new oil and gas leases and especially on the capacity for our companies to invest in fossil fuel capacity. It’s really going into administrative bloat. This is clearly not a gun law problem that’s driving most of the violent crime. The thing I’d like to remind people is the border problem is not primarily about the 2 or 3 million illegal aliens.

Darius Garland scores 30 to push Cavaliers past Pelicans, 113-103

By TOM WITHERSDarius Garland has developed a knack for when it’s time for him to take over a game. Garland scored 30 points and Jarrett Allen added 24 as the Cavaliers rallied in the fourth quarter with star Donovan Mitchell injured on the bench and beat the road-weary Pelicans, 113-103. Mitchell scored 11 points in 22 minutes before sitting out the fourth with what the team called a strained left groin. Garland scored 25 and added eight of his 11 assists in the second half. That’s when the Cavs buckled down on defense and Garland went to work.

Beyoncé ties Grammys record; Bad Bunny gets crowd dancing

By the time the show started on CBS, Beyoncé had already won two Grammys. Beyoncé entered Sunday’s ceremony as the leading nominee including album, song and record of the year. The singer showed up after her song “Broke Horses” won for best rock performance and best rock song, a songwriter’s award, and best Americana album. There could be many other firsts: If Bad Bunny wins album of the year for “Un Verano Sin Ti,” it would be the first time a Spanish-language album has taken home the top honor. “Degradation Rules” by Ozzy Osbourne featuring Tony Iommi won the best metal performance and his album “Patient Number 9” won best rock album.

Beavers’ latest win is the best yet

Two high-octane football teams that have been on a roll collided Friday night when unbeaten Wheeling Central and Beaver Local traded offensive blows at Pastore Field. “Credit to them (the Beavers),” said Wheeling Central coach Mike Young. The Beavers’ defense then turned the Knights away again as White picked off a Central pass. The Beaver Local coach was asked if it was his greatest comeback win as a coach? Their first-ever meeting was in 1996, a 25-21 Wheeling Central win.

Expanded high school playoffs a bit too much

It’s hard to imagine today brings the 11th week of high school football in Ohio and the start of the postseason. Ohio high school football playoffs now involve twice the number of teams that previously advanced to the postseason. Absolutely, it’s very nice to see more local high school athletes continuing their seasons. In fact, the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association initially had proposed expanding to 12 teams per region. High school football is performed at a high level, where everyone understands that competing and teamwork are important, but so is winning.

Vance, Cruz stop in Hanoverton

HANOVERTON — Republican Ohio U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, rallied crowd members gathered at the Spread Eagle Tavern Friday, urging them to take back America Nov. 8. Cruz and Vance rolled into Hanoverton on the Take Back America bus tour Friday, pumping up the crowd during a public rally on Plymouth Street in front of the historic tavern that’s played host to many prominent GOP figures. When you have a national figure come to a little town like Hanoverton, it’s kind of special.”Johnson said he was contacted by Vance about having the bus tour stop in Hanoverton. Vance believes in.”After the rally, Vance and Cruz invited members of the crowd to join them by the bus for photos and autographs and to also sign the bus.
