The International Press Centre (IPC), Lagos, is very concerned over reported attacks on journalists and other media professionals covering today’s presidential and senatorial elections. Information reaching IPC’s-JOURNALISTS-ELECTION-DAY-SAFETY-ALERT DESK indicates that not less than three journalists and media professionals have been assaulted and subjected to unlawful arrests. The youths were said to be lamenting the hardship in the country but chose to transfer their aggression to journalists. I kicked him with my steel-toed sketchers and fortunately, apart from a few scratches, I escaped unhurt,” the report stated. He also called on the Inspector General of Police to enlighten police officers and men on election duty to protect and not attack journalists.

Buhari sends nominees for NDDC board to Senate – Umana

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent to the Senate for confirmation, the names of people who are to form the governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Umana Umana, disclosed this on Thursday during a working visit to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, according to a report by The Nation newspaper. “I am happy to state that some of the serious pending issues, like the absence of the NDDC Board, have also been addressed. Mr Umana was accompanied by the acting Managing Director of NDDC, Emmanuel Audu-Ohwavborua, other officials of the NDDC and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. The minister said the Senate, on its resumption, would act on the president’s nomination for the NDDC board.

Europa League: Uzoho unable to save Omonia, Ronaldo seals victory for United

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and his Cypriot club, Omonia Nicosia, have crashed out of the Europa League following a 2-0 defeat to table toppers, Real Sociedad. Uzoho was retained in-between the sticks for Thursday’s encounter after his heroic performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford a fortnight ago. But the goalkeeper was unable to save his troubled club this time as their poor run in the Europa League extended to five games with no point. In the other Group E tie, Cristiano Ronaldo sealed victory for Manchester United as they affirmed their qualification to the next round with a 3-0 victory over Sheriff. Thursday’s victory meant United are through with a game to spare.

Oando Clean Energy Limited to lead dialogue sessions at COP27 in Egypt

On 7 November, the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) themed ‘Delivering for People and the Planet’ kicked off in Sharm El Sheik, Egypt. By 2050, climate change will lead to an additional 78 million people experiencing chronic hunger – over half of them in Africa. In the private sector, Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL), the renewable energy subsidiary of Oando PLC, will also be in attendance. Specifically, Oando Clean Energy Limited, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN), and Stratus Consult Limited, will lead two dialogues at the Nigerian Pavilion. If COP26 was about countries making promises to avoid catastrophic climate change, the broader themes in Egypt will be moving from ambition to action, especially in Africa.

The recent weekend was a bountiful harvest of goals for Super Eagles players playing in Europe. He scored the game-winning goal for Napoli against Bologna the week before his current brilliant finish against Jose Mourinho’s side. 2023: Governors responsible for political violence – IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has blamed the increasing incidences of political violence in the country on some state governors. On Thursday, Mr Baba said the meeting was called to engage political parties’ leadership on the increasing trend of political violence and to present a common front in addressing the issues. The IGP blamed most incidents of violence on political extremism, misinformation, intolerance, wrong political orientation, hate speeches, incitement and desperation of strategic actors. Mr Baba said the leadership of political parties are critical in the eradication of political intolerance, threat, violence and other negative tendencies in democratic processes. The IGP appealed to the leadership of political parties to be determined to show the right leadership virtues and publicly dissociate themselves from acts of political brigandage and violence.

Withheld Salaries: Reps reply ASUU President

The House of Representatives has denied ever ensuring the payment of Nigerian lecturers’ withheld eight months’ salaries. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had on many occasions stated that the intervention of the Speaker of the parliament, Femi Gbajabiamila, included facilitating the payment of the academics’ withheld salaries. Tribune quoted Mr Osodeke to have said the Speaker presented a signed letter stating the government’s commitment to paying the withheld salaries. The union described Mr Gbajabiamila as a gentleman and expressed optimism that the withheld salaries would be released in two tranches. READ ALSO:Three months later, however, members of the unions are yet to receive their withheld salaries as well as some part of their October salaries which the government said it paid them on a pro-rata basis.
