NOTTINGHAM, Jan 26 — Marcus Rashford scored a dazzling solo goal as Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Wednesday to virtually book a place at Wembley next month. “I'm happy with the performance and I think over 90 minutes we controlled it,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports. But he highlighted a disallowed Forest goal in the first half, warning his side could not afford to let opponents back into the match when they were in charge. Brazil midfielder Casemiro was back in the United starting line-up after being suspended for Sunday's 3-2 Premier League defeat at leaders Arsenal, which left United fourth in the table. Brazil winger Antony went close to making it 2-0 minutes later as United threatened to overwhelm the home team.

Global shares rise; Sterling rallies as dollar retreats

Europe’s STOXX 600 index rose 1.4 per cent to finish at a more than one-month high. The US dollar index fell to a three-week low, bolstering commodity prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.07 per cent, the S&P 500 gained 1.63 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite added 2.25 per cent. Europe’s STOXX 600 index rose 1.4 per cent to finish at a more than one-month high. The European Central Bank meets tomorrow and is expected to raise rates by 75 basis points.

S&P 500, Nasdaq slide, but Dow ends higher on mixed earnings picture

The price-weighted Dow advanced, held aloft by industrials, while weakness in market-moving tech and tech-adjacent megacaps depressed the S&P 500 and Nasdaq in the wake of downbeat quarterly results and dour guidance. Among the 11 major sectors of the S&P 500, industrials had the biggest percentage gain, with communication services .SPLRCL, weighed by Meta, down the most. Third-quarter reporting season forges ahead at full speed, with 227 of the companies in the S&P 500 having reported. The S&P 500 posted 23 new 52-week highs and 12 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 93 new highs and 119 new lows.

IMF: China economic slowdown to drag on Asia growth

BEIJING, Oct 28 — China’s “sharp and uncharacteristic” economic slowdown is expected to drag on growth across Asia through the end of next year, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned Friday, darkening an already gloomy global outlook. The crises have dulled the rebound from the Covid-19 pandemic, even as Asia has remained a “relative bright spot” compared with other parts of the globe, the IMF said in its Regional Economic Outlook. The new report downgrades the growth forecast for Asia to four per cent this year, down 0.9 per centage points from a previous outlook in April. China’s “broad-based” slowdown “is estimated to have important spillovers to the rest of Asia through trade and financial links”, according to the IMF. Analysts still expect the country to fall well below its stated annual growth target of about 5.5 per cent.
