The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board and Toronto District School Board are all set to continue remote learning in 2023-24. The Durham, Peel and Lambton Kent district school boards plan to offer virtual learning again, subject to enrolment. Ontario decided in February 2022 to require boards to offer virtual learning for the current school year, and hasn't yet made a decision for 2023-24. Elementary teachers, however, are adamantly against the option, with the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario saying it is "fundamentally opposed to (virtual learning) being used as an instructional and learning model." In the Avon Maitland District School Board, about 80 elementary students and 50 secondary students are in virtual learning this year.
"Absolutely still in place," Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, the family's oldest son, said of the not-so-subtle directive. "Set in stone," added Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, 21 months his sibling's junior. Brady Tkachuk agreed there will be an adjustment to the new dynamic. "Two good teams in that division going forward." "Tons of the guys on the team had family there doing the same thing," Matthew Tkachuk said.5 months ago CityNews Ottawa
Police in London, Ont., say they have grounds to believe a woman was sexually assaulted by five players on Canada’s 2018 junior men’s hockey team. The revelation that Hockey Canada maintained a fund drawing on minor hockey membership fees to pay for uninsured liabilities, including sexual abuse claims, fuelled the furor. Sponsors withdrew, the national sports minister stripped Hockey Canada of federal funding and the governing body’s leaders were called onto the carpet in Ottawa by parliamentary committees. The application was compiled based on interviews with E.M. and a dozen players from the Canadian junior team. Her husband contacted Hockey Canada and provided a picture of the player who accompanied E.M. to the hotel that night.3 months ago CityNews Ottawa

To the extent we think about players’ health at all, it’s usually in the expectation that injuries will happen and we’ll all move on. To the extent we think about players’ health at all, it’s usually in the expectation that injuries will happen and we’ll all move on. Should Hamlin need it now, it would run out sometime around his 30th birthday. The players should receive nothing short of lifetime health care because the effects of playing the sport will be with them for good. The fact these extreme events are so routine is yet another argument for the necessity of danger pay and guaranteed health care — and it should also make us all uncomfortable.2 months ago CityNews Ottawa

The trade, which saw the Blue Jays acquire Varsho for catcher Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr., caught the 26-year-old by surprise. And so, I’m thinking the same thing,” Daulton Varsho said Saturday, discussing the trade that sent him from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Toronto Blue Jays a day earlier. He’d seen his name in plenty of speculation this off-season and his father had even mentioned the Blue Jays as a good potential fit. Only three players — Teoscar Hernandez, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Randal Grichuk — have made more plate appearances for the Blue Jays over that span. Bullpen adds remain possible, as well, although that could necessitate the Blue Jays subtracting from what is currently a crowded field of relievers.3 months ago CityNews Ottawa
Tim Stützle hated the way he started Tuesday's game but felt pretty good about how things ended as the Ottawa Senators blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-0. Frustration was evident as the losses play a toll on the Blue Jackets. Four minor penalties in the second cost the Blue Jackets with Ottawa scoring twice on the power play. The game remained scoreless after the first period, but the Blue Jackets had the better chances of the two teams. It was the start the Blue Jackets were looking for, but Forsberg was up to the challenge.2 months ago CityNews Ottawa
