Spotify informed its employees on Monday that it will be cutting jobs this week, making it the latest in a wave of mass layoffs following hiring surges during the height of the c ovid-19 pandemic. The news comes after Ek told staff that the company would slow hiring by 25% in June of last year but said at the time that he didn’t plan on carrying out any layoffs, the Wall Street Journal reported. Although the company has taken cost-cutting measures over the last year, the savings haven’t been enough, leaving Ek with the difficult decision to reduce staff. The massively-reduced Twitter struggled to combat what appeared to be government-affiliated accounts’ efforts to dampen news surrounding the protests, according to a report that cites past and current Twitter employees. According to The Washington Post, Chinese-language accounts started to flood the platform with links to porn services and escorts next to city names. For anybody actively looking for more news about the protests, this would flood their feeds with what amounted to porn ads. The accounts were reportedly dormant for months or years before being activated all at once, according to the Post. The campaign was confirmed by other China-centric reporters on Twitter who took screenshots of the efforts to screen information about the protests.2 months ago Gizmodo

“The Power of the Doctor,” the final outing of Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor and Chris Chibnall’s run as Doctor Who’s showrunner, is, like a lot of the duo’s recent escapades in time and space, a difficult piece of television to write about. There are few finales that could navigate the complex, nuanced weirdness of the current state of Doctor Who and come out largely immaculate. To attempt to explain what happens in “The Power of the Doctor” narratively is an exercise in futility. Even the Master’s supposed grand plan—becoming the Doctor just to defame them across the cosmos—is a bold and wonderfully Master-esque scheme. Maybe the real power of the Doctor is to simply accept the change given to us, and move on as quickly as Doctor Who itself has into a new adventure.3 months ago Gizmodo
Musk fired CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, top policy executive Vijaya Gadde, and general counsel Sean Edgett, according to the Wall Street Journal. Musk sought to calm the considerable concerns of Twitter’s large corporate advertisers on Thursday with a statement on the social media platform outlining his vision for the future. Ian Miles Cheong, a Malaysian influencer on the social media site who previously worked for Milo Yiannopoulos, encouraged his followers to post offensive memes late Thursday. AdvertisementAnd while Trump has previously said he wouldn’t re-join Twitter, even if he were allowed, that’s obviously bullshit. Twitter is a tiny social media company compared with other big names like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, but it’s spent the past decade as the digital water cooler of political journalists.3 months ago Gizmodo
Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes now has a sentencing date after being convicted of scamming close to $900 million from investors with her company’s blood testing startup. Holmes also claimed Rosendorff went to Holmes’ home, where he was supposedly greeted by Holmes’ partner Billy Evans and was then told to leave.
