Steve Rosenberg, the BBC’s Russia editor, grew up in Chingford in east London. Many are wary of expressing a public opinion about the war and about Putin but still, many people do talk to us. But I think he believes that western support for Ukraine will weaken, and that Russia is in this for the long term. @bbceurovision @EBU_HQ @BBCNews @BBCRadio2 pic.twitter.com/WXj16Q4GcN — Steve Rosenberg (@BBCSteveR) May 14, 2022What was it like accompanying Mikhail Gorbachev on piano? Most years we do this Eurovision Piano Request live programme where people send in their requests, and I play them on the piano.
January 6 obviously wasn’t enough for Republicans in Congress to actually impeach or for conservatives to break with Trump in any meaningful way. I have no doubt that many Republicans, like McConnell himself, personally despise Trump for summoning a mob to attack the Capitol. That’s partly because Republican elites understand they can’t win without the base, and the base remains committed to Trumpism. They have led to a situation in which moments of brief uncertainty almost always result in a further radicalization of the Republican party and the right in general. It has shaped Republican politics for a long time and has almost always overwhelmed attempts to moderate since at least the 1990s, an era in which a more explicitly anti-democratic populism moved to the center of Republican politics.5 months ago The Guardian

At her recent party conference, she spoke of herself as “the first prime minister of our country to have gone to a comprehensive school”. “She flirted with every man she comes across,” says one (female) former Tory minister. The most attention she received in the post came with a bizarrely emphatic speech she gave to the Tory party conference. Liz Truss, with her husband Hugh O’Leary, outside 10 Downing Street, where she announced her resignation as prime minister on 20 October. In thrall for so many years to free enterprise, she seemed to expect as prime minister that the compliment would be repaid.5 months ago The Guardian
The Biden administration is urging student loan borrowers to continue applying for debt relief despite a federal appeals court order late on Friday that temporarily halted this program. “[This] temporary order does not prevent borrowers from applying for student debt relief,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement following the eighth circuit court of appeals’ temporary stay. The temporary stay “does not prevent us from reviewing these applications and preparing them for transmission to loan servicers,” Jean-Pierre’s statement also said. Biden’s debt relief plan has quickly turned into a political flashpoint in advance of November’s midterm elections. Many Democrats battling difficult reelection races have distanced themselves from Biden’s student debt relief efforts.5 months ago The Guardian
Borussia Dortmund stormed past VfB Stuttgart 5-0 with two goals from Jude Bellingham on Saturday to notch their first win in four league games and climb to fourth place in the Bundesliga. Dortmund scored after two minutes through Bellingham and were 3-0 up by half-time. The early opener threw Stuttgart off their game and before they had any time to react, Dortmund struck again. After the break Dortmund picked up where they had left off and midfielder Bellingham got his second goal of the afternoon, curling a superb effort past keeper Florian Müller. Could too much oxygen from excessive jogging have somehow flooded her brain, causing detachment from reality and, finally, total breakdown? Johnson (whose visible immunity to the benefits of regular exercise surely warrants scientific investigation) was not above “running” from a car into a hotel. Other French commentators diagnosed, watching Sarkozy, something peculiarly rightwing about his hobby, even if it was cheap and accessible. That theory, derided elsewhere, was resoundingly endorsed by one Boris Johnson, Telegraph columnist and then MP for Henley. It did seem the only explanation for Johnson’s willingness, not long ago, to twit the SNP’s Ian Blackford about his weight.5 months ago The Guardian
It has been coming for Bath, who have looked good in patches this season, if short on confidence. They built a first-half lead, weathered Northampton’s fightback, enjoyed the rub of the green from the referee, Anthony Woodthorpe, and clinched the win. James Grayson then missed a relatively straightforward kick at goal for Northampton before Bath were first on the board when Reid ran clear to the line after a delightful show and go from Redpath. Redpath’s interception try soon after, picking off Fraser Dingwall’s pass and scampering to the line, ensured Bath could enjoy the final 10 minutes safe in the knowledge that victory was theirs. The replacement Sam Graham did register Northampton’s second try but another Worboys penalty kept the visitors at bay.5 months ago The Guardian
