A few of what are now styled as generative AI companies have collectively raised hundreds of millions of dollars, spurring a hunt for a new generation of AI unicorns. David Song, a senior at Stanford University who is tracking the boom, has collated a list of over 100 generative AI startups. Like many contributing to the buzz, he says testing generative AI tools that make images, text, or code has left him with a sense of wonder at the possibilities. “Using generative AI makes me feel like I’m using magic.”Guo believes generative AI is a leap in the potential of AI technology similar to one beginning in 2012 that reshaped the whole tech industry and the products it offers.

Uber Squeezed Europe’s Taxi Drivers. Now It Wants to Hire Them

Taxi drivers in Paris rioted back in 2015 to protest the presence of Uber in their city, burning tires, blocking roads, and attacking drivers they suspected of working for the company. Today, seven years later, instead of fighting against the app, 500 taxi drivers in the French capital are logging on to earn extra money, according to Uber. Across Europe, the company is striking deals with taxi businesses, unions, and individual drivers, persuading them to offer taxi rides on Uber’s app. Paris is just the latest city where Uber says hundreds of taxi drivers have agreed to join forces, meaning users no longer have to step into the street to hail a conventional taxi. Taxi drivers will benefit from this partnership too, Diaz claims, because they will access extra demand that will translate into additional earnings.

The “Twitter Files” are to journalism what cosplay is to superheroism: an occasionally convincing imitation of the real thing. Though I shouldn’t insult cosplayers so: they bring joy and beauty to public life, while the Twitter Files are merely proving to be grist for the likes of QAnon and other extremely online individuals addicted to viral outrage. “But, aha!” they seem to say, "now intrepid journalist Bari Weiss has shown this is not so!" First and foremost, “visibility filtering” covers everything, including user-generated filtering. In other words, the thing that Weiss actually “uncovered” was something Twitter admitted to over four years ago.

Android Users Can Finally 'Like' Messages From iPhones

Photos and videos get pixelated, messages from Android users show up as the dreaded green chat bubble on iPhone, and then there are emoji reactions. This week, Google said that updates coming to Messages will allow Android users to respond to iPhone texts with emojis. Other updates include the ability to thread responses to individual messages, embed YouTube videos directly in messages, and get automatic transcriptions of voice messages on certain phones. Uber users can look forward to audio ads playing while they wait for a ride and during the trip. This week, Netflix said it will finally move to put an end to people sharing their logins.

TikTok’s Security Threat Comes Into Focus

Officials in the United States have long warned of a potential national security threat because the wildly popular social video platform TikTok is owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance. The group typically focuses on internal, employee issues, but the US-based individuals were reportedly not affiliated with TikTok or ByteDance. Researchers from the threat intelligence firm SOCRadar disclosed the leak to Microsoft on September 24, and the company quickly closed the exposure. Cloud misconfigurations are a longstanding security risk that have led to countless exposures and, sometimes, breaches. The White House announced plans for a labeling scheme that would be a sort of EnergyStar for IoT digital security.
