The Pittsburgh Steelers 2022 rookie class was once again called upon to contribute in a significant way their first season in the NFL. For the most recent episode of the Steelers Stat Geek podcast, I compared the Steelers 2022 rookie class to those of the five previous seasons in both their usage and production. But how did they compare to other NFL team’s rookie class for 2022? With a grade of B+, the Steelers were in the sixth spot when it came to the rookie class of 2022. Pickett and the Pittsburgh offense started to settle in, and they put together their best drive of the game. Tua and the Miami offense quickly moved the ball into Pittsburgh territory and in the red-zone. Desperately needing a drive, Pickett and the Pittsburgh offense woke up. Pickett’s pass intended for Diontae Johnson was intercepted, and it ended the Steelers’ drive and looked like their chances of winning the game. Pickett hit Pat Freiermuth on a huge 4th down conversion, and then Diontae Johnson moved the Steelers’ offense within striking distance.

The Steelers were losers in the contest, but that doesn’t mean every player had a good or bad performance. Players who play well can be considered ‘Winners’, while those who left a lot to be desired can be called ‘Losers’. Minkah Fitzpatrick truly did it all for the Steelers 2022 defense. Freiermuth emerged as a go-to target in 2022, leading the Steelers in 4th quarter receptions, yards, touchdowns and first downs. He did match his rookie season in touchdowns scored, with the exact same seven rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns he had in 2021. While we all wait to see what his future holds, it’s hard to deny the improvement he showed over his rookie season. Stat Line: 5.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 5 passes defended, 39 tackles, 8 tackles for a loss, 12 QB hits.

Report Card: Grading the Steelers Week 7 loss to the Miami Dolphins

The Steelers followed their surprising win over the Buccaneers in Week 6 with another close loss in Week 7, this time to the Miami Dolphins. The Steelers ten points is the second lowest total of the season, with only the three-point showing against the Buffalo Bills standing worse. The Steelers had eleven possessions in this game, meaning they also recorded a game with less than 1 point scored per possession. The Dolphins aren’t a run-focused team, and the Steelers gave up more than the Dolphins normally run for, but it didn’t hurt them too much. A muffed kickoff led to the Steelers being a positive kickoff team this week even with a 28-yard return to start the game.

The Steelers Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins was their 5th decided by eight points or less. The Steelers 2-5 record is bad, and the team is bad, but they are also just good enough to keep games close. Let’s look at the Pittsburgh Steelers snap counts from Week 7, and see where they fell short. Freiermuth’s 7.6 yards per target is second on the team among qualifying receivers and ranks tenth among NFL tight ends. The Steelers defense played much better after the change and only gave up two first downs the rest of the game.
