Bengtsson, Hasse/Getty Images(EAST PALESTINE, Ohio) — There were more toxic chemicals aboard the train that derailed in Ohio than originally reported, new data shows. Among the substances were ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylhexyl acrylate and isobutylene were also in the rail cars that were derailed, the list shows. The evacuation orders for the residents in East Palestine were lifted on Wednesday after air and water samples that were collected in the region were deemed safe. “Residents may still smell odors from the site,” the EPA said, suggesting that those experiencing any symptoms call their medical provider. A town hall has been scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to allow residents to ask questions about the effects of the derailment, East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway announced in a press release on Sunday.

George Santos to resign following revelations that he fabricated or embellished much of his background while running for Congress last year. “He disgraced the House of Representatives.”Cairo was joined by local party leaders and freshman New York Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, who was remote. “I join with you and I join with my colleagues saying that George Santos does not have the ability to serve here in the House of Representatives and should resign,” D’Esposito said. Santos has since acknowledged he didn’t graduate from college, as he claimed, and didn’t work directly for Goldman Sachs or Citigroup. On Wednesday, Cairo specifically referenced Santos’ past claim about his maternal grandparents fleeing persecution in Europe during World War II.

Ozone layer on track to recover within decades: ‘We need to be vigilant’

NASA(NEW YORK) — When the hole in the ozone layer was first discovered in 1985, Paul A. Newman was shaken as a scientist. The Montreal Protocol, a universally ratified United Nations treaty that went into effect in 1989, phased out the production of ozone-depleting substances including CFCs. And the U.N.’s most recent four-year assessment of those efforts, published Monday, found that the ozone layer — which protects the planet against harmful radiation that’s linked to skin cancer and crop damage — is slowly continuing to recover. “Volcanoes, when they spew particles into the stratosphere, it has a direct impact on the ozone layer. So if man starts doing the same thing to cool the Earth’s surface, it’s going to have an impact on the ozone layer,” Newman said.

Incoming NY lawmaker’s biography contradicted by alleged alma mater, employer

Representatives for New York University and Baruch College confirmed to ABC News that they have no record of Santos attending their institutions. However, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) website states he received degrees from NYU and Baruch. His campaign website also said he graduated from Baruch. The same biography on the NRCC site claimed that Santos worked for companies such as Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. The mention of Friends of Pets United appears to have been removed from Santos’ campaign website.

McCarthy rejects Democrats Schiff and Swalwell from House Intelligence Committee

Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, both D-Calif., to the powerful House Intelligence Committee — fulfilling a promise McCarthy made even before he won the gavel. In a letter sent to House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, McCarthy cast his decision as one of “integrity,” suggesting that Schiff and Swalwell would weaken the committee on which they had served until January. Integrity matters more,” McCarthy wrote. “I believe there’s 200 other Democrats that can serve on that committee,” McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday. Over the weekend, Jeffries formally selected Schiff and Swalwell to sit on the Intelligence Committee, despite McCarthy’s promise to keep them off the panel.
