UAPB fires Gamble as head football coach

Doc Gamble has been fired as University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff head football coach. Offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Don Treadwell has been named interim head coach. Treadwell, 62, was previously head coach at alma mater Miami University of Ohio from 2011-13 and offensive coordinator and interim head coach at Michigan State University from 2007-10, among other stops in his 37-year coaching career. He joined Cedric Thomas' staff in 2018 as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach and was promoted to head coach in April 2020. He's also been an assistant at Alcorn State and the University of Cincinnati, and he was head coach at Cincinnati's Withrow and Fairfield high schools.

Arkansas Supreme Court orders discipline panel to turn over files on suspended judge

The Arkansas Supreme Court on Friday ordered a state judicial commission to turn over its case file on an El Dorado judge who agreed to undergo a two-month unpaid suspension rather than challenge misconduct accusations against him, a punishment that the high court approved earlier this month. A majority of the high court justices countered that while the rule may shield the records from public view, the Supreme Court has the authority to review them and is "ultimately responsible for approving, modifying or rejecting the Commission's recommended sanction." The commission must turn over the file by 4 p.m. Monday or appear in court to explain why it shouldn't be held in contempt of court. Wood is in favor of changing the committee's rule to allow the justices to review investigative records in uncontested cases. In 1997, he was named one of 10 Outstanding Young Arkansans by the Arkansas Junior Chamber of Commerce.

U.S. Border Patrol sends migrants places where no help waits

Customs and Border Protection, which oversees the Border Patrol, did not respond to repeated questions about families and individuals interviewed and the addresses assigned to them. But the snafus suggest a pattern of Border Patrol agents, particularly in Texas, sending migrants without friends or family in the United States to offices that get no notice. Yet because those addresses appear on migrants’ paperwork, important notices may later be sent there. Victor Quijada traveled with relatives last month to Denver after border agents sent the Venezuelan family to an American Red Cross office building. She said she knows of several migrants assigned to addresses of groups that can’t help them.

Once an NFL staple, fullbacks are fading

One year in Green Bay, we had three fullbacks on our 53-man roster, but they were all contributors on special teams. All but two teams had fullbacks playing significant snaps. And whereas eight fullbacks were chosen in the NFL Draft in 2003, that number had fallen to zero by 2019 and '20. In 1990, one out of every five carries in an NFL game belonged to a fullback, but as recently as 2015, that number had fallen to less than one in 100. And it's very possible that the fullback position, currently headed to the mothballs, will eventually make a comeback.
