NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks shook off a shaky start and are turning higher in early trading on Wall Street, keeping major indexes on track for weekly gains after several days of up-and-down trading. The technology sector — social media companies in particular — have been hit the hardest this year as inflation and higher interest rates have pushed investors out of riskier, more speculative stocks. Investors remain concerned about inflation, since higher interest rates tend to discourage borrowing and investments, slowing economic activity. The healthy jobs market is a sticking point since it suggests the Fed will have to persist in raising interest rates. In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude gained 25 cents to $84.76 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

GOP-led states appealing dismissal of suit over loan relief

The plan, announced in August, would cancel $10,000 in student loan debt for those making less than $125,000 or households with less than $250,000 in income. The cancellation applies to federal student loans used to attend undergraduate and graduate school, along with Parent Plus loans. Biden on Friday blasted Republicans who have criticized his relief program, saying “their outrage is wrong and it’s hypocritical.” He noted that some Republican officials had debt and pandemic relief loans forgiven. The Justice Department says the law allows Biden to reduce or erase student loan debt during a national emergency. He said student loan defaults have skyrocketed over the past 2 1/2 years.

Some said they came to seek Warnock, who is seeking reelection in the midterm elections on Nov. 8 against Republican challenger Herschel Walker. But that hasn’t stopped politicians from showcasing celebrities, hoping to reach voters who may be on the fence. Celebrities have also gone directly into politics in 2022, including Walker, a University of Georgia football star. There’s also Pennsylvania Republican Senate candidate Mehmet Oz, a doctor who made a fortune as a TV show host. Harvey, who wrote a 2017 book about celebrity influence in politics, said there’s strong evidence that celebrities can draw media attention to issues.

Smaller company stocks outpaced the broader market, lifting the Russell 2000 index 2.7% higher. United Parcel Service initially rose, but then slipped 0.3% after the package delivery service beat Wall Street’s third-quarter earnings and revenue forecasts. Packaging maker Crown Holdings fell 16.8% after its latest earnings fell short of estimates. The Federal Reserve and central banks around the world have been raising interest rates to tame inflation. The Fed is expected to raise interest rates another three-quarters of a percentage point at its upcoming meeting in November.

On Wednesday, the new government will face a vote in the upper chamber, the Senate, where it also holds a solid majority. Such attitudes are tantamount to “a lack of respect for the Italian people, who don’t need lessons,” Meloni said. With the confidence votes out of the way, Meloni will be able to get down to the business of governing. “I have never felt sympathy or closeness for any non-democratic regime, including fascism,” Meloni told lawmakers in the Chamber of Deputies.
