The U.S. has found no evidence suggesting the three mysterious aerial objects that fighter jets shot down in recent days were connected to Chinese espionage, unlike the sophisticated surveillance balloon taken down over the coast of South Carolina on Feb. 4, the White House said on Tuesday. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre declined during a subsequent press conference to provide any more specifics when asked how the U.S. reached that conclusion. They spoke days after the White House and Pentagon revealed – at times through hastily organized press conferences – that fighter jets intercepted the mysterious objects and used missiles to shoot them down. The White House and Pentagon almost immediately connected that balloon to Chinese attempts to surveil sensitive sites but said the U.S. successfully defended against intelligence breaches. He said the missile “landed harmlessly in the waters of Lake Huron” and the F-16 succeeded in its second attempt.
