UEFA apologises for scenes at Stade de France before Champions League final

UEFA has apologised for events at Paris 2024 venue the Stade de France in the run-up to the 2022 Champions League Final after an independent report concluded they were at fault for chaotic scenes outside the venue. The Stade de France stepped in to replace Saint-Petersburg as the host for European football’s showpiece club match between Real Madrid and Liverpool. A report published by an independent panel determined that there were eight factors that caused or contributed to events in Paris. The Stade de France is scheduled to host athletics and rugby sevens competitions during the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Para athletics during the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The Paris 2024 Olympics are due to take place from July 26 to August 11 with the Paralympics set to follow from August 28 to September 8.

World Rowing President confirms application to add beach sprint at 2028 Olympics

World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland says the governing body "is in the process of applying" for coastal rowing to feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This has not prevented World Rowing from continuing to chase its ambition of securing a spot for coastal rowing in future editions of the Olympics. In an interview with Francs Jeux, Rolland confirmed World Rowing is proposing beach sprint as the selected format. Beach sprints are already set to feature at the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali and the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. Rolland refuted any suggestion that the growth of coastal rowing would be detrimental to classic rowing disciplines.

Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin has branded the international summit on the participation of its and Belarus' athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics as "absolutely unacceptable". "Now we see an undisguised desire to destroy the unity of international sports and the international Olympic movement, to make sport a means of pressure in order to resolve political issues." Matytsin claimed that an absence of Russian and Belarusian athletes at Paris 2024 would divide the Olympic Movement. One of the proposals made at the international summit came from Poland's Sports Minister Kamil Bortnichuk, who suggested dissident Russian and Belarusian athletes could compete at Paris 2024 as a team of neutrals. A collective statement from the international summit is expected in the "coming days".

With Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman watching on, proceedings commenced with Saudi Arabia's national anthem and the raising of the nation's flag. Spectators soon turned to the Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdul Aziz, the Governor of Riyadh, for the formal opening of the Saudi Games under the permission of the Crown Prince.

"We will do everything we can to protect East Brisbane State School and Raymond Park from this disastrous plan. Haline Ly, President of East Brisbane State School P&C, said: "The Queensland Government is planning to demolish the Gabba at the end of 2025, and our school cannot survive if this happens. "There are 315 students at East Brisbane State School with families getting ready to enrol their kids next year, and they don’t know where they’ll be learning, playing and meeting their friends in two years’ time. The AUD2.5 billion for the Gabba rebuild should be going towards building new schools, not tearing them down."

Russia, India and Kenya top list as AIU issues latest global list of sanctions

Of the 473 athletes or athlete support personnel listed on the AIU’s Global List of Ineligible Persons, uploaded on December 31 2022, a total of 92 represent Russia. Many of the Russian cases relate to infractions before the November 2015 ban, but there are numerous infractions detected in the last three years. World Athletics banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from its competitions in February last year in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Kenya, renowned for its long-distance and middle-distance runners, has been classified since 2016 in category A of the countries under surveillance by World Athletics and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), alongside Belarus, Ethiopia, Morocco or Ukraine. But World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in Rome that a serious response from the Kenyan Sports Minister, Amina Mohamed, meant both sides were now working towards a solution.
