UN sanctions Haiti top gang leader Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has approved a “sanctions regime” to punish criminal gangs in Haiti and called for an arms embargo on non-state actors as security, economic and health crises deepen in the Caribbean country. The UNSC on Friday unanimously passed a resolution proposed by the United States and Mexico that sanctioned powerful gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, also known as “Barbecue”. “Jimmy Cherizier (AKA ‘Barbeque’) has engaged in acts that threaten the peace, security, and stability of Haiti and has planned, directed, or committed acts that constitute serious human rights abuses,” the resolution reads. While Cherizier was the only target named in the resolution, the measure establishes a foundation for further sanctions going forward. The resolution came as Haiti faced a cholera outbreak that has been worsened due to continuing political and economic upheaval.

Blackouts in parts of Ukraine after ‘massive’ Russian attacks

Hundreds of thousands of people in central and western Ukraine are without power after Russia carried out missile and drone attacks. Local officials in regions across Ukraine reported strikes on energy facilities and power outages as engineers scrambled to restore the ruined network. State grid operator Ukrenergo said the attacks targeted transmission infrastructure in western Ukraine, but that power supply restrictions were being put in place in 10 regions across the country, including in the capital, Kyiv. In comments to AFP news agency on Saturday, Ukrenergo said some parts of Ukraine are reducing their electricity use by up to 20 percent. Russia and Ukraine have also accused each other of planning to blow up a huge dam in the Kherson region.

Why Ukraine should not accept Bosnia-style peace

Ukraine, I feel, may be heading towards Bosnia’s fate – a state made dysfunctional by a deeply flawed peace deal. With Russia still holding most of the Donbas region and parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia, Ukraine may find itself in the same situation. At the negotiating table, the military situation on the ground is the most important factor shaping a peace settlement. A flawed peace rendered my country deeply dysfunctional and undermined its security and development. Zelenskyy would do well to remind his Western partners of this precedent and urge them not to make unreasonable demands for early peace talks.
