SXSW Announces Marijuana And Psychedelics Panel Lineup For 2023 Festival

The 2023 South by Southwest (SXSW) panel lineup has officially been released, with a number of events focused on drug policy. And notably, next year’s festival will see more psychedelics panels than those centered on marijuana. “We’re excited to host so many innovative thinkers across many different pursuits and professions,” Hugh Forrest, SXSW co-president, said in a press release. Is cannabis actuallyThis panel will focus on the unique environmental impacts of the often energy-intensive cannabis industry and the role regulations could play in promoting sustainability. Journalist Shayla Love and Psychedelic Alpha’s Josh Hardman will be among those participating in the panel to discuss the issue.

Federal Court Gives Justice Department One Month To Respond In Safe Drug Consumption Case Following Extension Request

A federal court says the Justice Department can only have one additional month to respond in a lawsuit concerning the legality of safe drug consumption sites, rather than two months as DOJ requested this week. That said, Rahul Gupta, the White House drug czar, recently said that the Biden administration is reviewing broader drug policy harm reduction proposals, including the authorization of supervised consumption sites—and he went so far as to suggest possible decriminalization. In 2021, Rhode Island’s governor signed a bill establishing a pilot program to allow safe consumption sites to operate in the state. A New York Assembly committee advanced a bill in May to establish a statewide safe consumption site program, allowing regulators to authorize facilities where people could use currently illicit drugs in a medically supervised environment. Germany wants EU permission for cannabis legalization (Newsletter: October 27, 2022)

/ FEDERALFormer Vice President Mike Pence’s nonprofit is urging Arkansas voters to defeat the marijuana legalization initiative on the November ballot. A Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City staffer spoke about a recent analysis of the economic impacts of cannabis legalization. Kathy Hochul (D) defended the state’s marijuana legalization policy as a justice and jobs-creating measure during a debate. South Dakota’s attorney general spoke about his concerns over medical cannabis and hemp laws. Pro-Choice Missouri is opposing the marijuana legalization initiative on the November ballot.

Arizona Nears $1 Billion In Legal Marijuana Sales For 2022

September 2021 was the last time medical marijuana sales were larger than recreational. In October 2021, medical sales were about $65.1 million—the last month-over-month increase—and recreational sales were $65.6 million. The ADHS reports are one month ahead of the ADOR financial reports, so the medical reports offer a glimpse of what is likely to come in medical marijuana sales. Arizona voters approved adult-use recreational marijuana in 2020 with the passage of Prop 207, the Smart and Safe Arizona Act. The medical marijuana market began in 2012, in the wake of the passage of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act in 2010.
